Clover,
South Carolina
Incorporated: Chartered in 1887
Size: About 2.4 square miles.
History: Clover officially began in
the mid-1870s around the site of a 5,000 gallon water tank
constructed to serve the steam engines of the Chester and
Lenoir Railroad Narrow Gauge Railroad. Legend has it that
water spilling over on to the ground caused patches of clover
to spring up and the town was referred to first as Clover
Patch.
Historic Sites: The Dr. E.W. Pressly
House at the corner of Pressly and Kings Mountain streets is a
two story Victorian home now, but used to be the one story
cottage of the town’s third doctor.
Clover Presbyterian Church, located on the
corner of Church and Kings Mountain streets, is the towns
oldest congregation having been organized in 1881.
Old Clover Post Office was once one of the
first six buildings marking Clover a town. Built by Josiah I.
Gwinn in 1884, it was the first post office built in the town.
Clover Centennial Park is located on a
corner downtown and was donated to the city to be used for a
park in celebration of the town’s centennial in 1987.
Did you know? Clover was first settled by
the descendants of the Scotch-Irish. In celebration of its
heritage, Clover residents host an annual Feis Chlobhair, or A
Clover Kinntra Festival the second week of June. Bagpipes
play, haggis and cabers are tossed and everyone has a good
time. Clover’s sister city in Northern Ireland is Larne
Borough in County Antrim.
Population: 3,915
Tax rate: .98 x 4%
of assessed value.
