Clover Band Places Third in AAA

The CHS Marching Band took the field at Newberry High School at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 25, and marched to third place in the state of SC for AAA bands.  It was a touching performance for a band that just one week ago finished 4th in the Upper-State Contest.  What made it so remarkable was Clover marched fifth out of twelve bands - eight slots from the end.  Few bands have ever cracked the top three from so far down the order.  But this was no ordinary band.  With the bands who marched before them posting scores in the seventies and eighties, Clover blew the bar wide open with a 93.40.  That score held all the way until Union clipped it with a 93.45 - six bands later.

The performance was vintage Clover - pumped up, fast, furious, emotional, and complicated!  It was the second highest finish in four years for the class of 2004.  Congratulations band on an incredible season.

State Results - all Classes

CHS is 4th at Upper State

The CHS Marching Band took the field at 9:00 P.M. on Saturday night in Clinton and put on the best performance of the year, so far, to march to 4th place with a 90.4 score.  Adrenalin was running high and it showed on the field as the band gave it all they had.  The drill was vintage Clover - fast, furious, and clean.  The music soared with highs and lows that generated loud applause from the crowd.  Our soloists were on and nailed every note.  The drum line smoked from beginning to end and the guard pumped up the GE scores.  Clover was one of only four bands to top the 90 mark..  Congratulations Mr. Turner, Mr. Lenard, Mr. Cohen, and Mr. Whack.

Clover Wins Second Place at Mt. Pleasant Marching Contest

The CHS marching band showed marked improvement Saturday as they posted a score of 92 and placed second in class and second overall at the Mt. Pleasant Marching Band Contest.  The band improved over 11 points in just one week (80.1 - 92.0)

Clover marched in Class AAAA for bands with up to 99 musicians.  Their class competition was North Davidson High School, Gaffney High School, and Cary High School.  Clover marched second in the class and when they were finished, they drove the scores sky high with an overall 92.0.  At the awards ceremony, the band won first or second in every category.  Heather Myers and the Color Guard took second in class in drum major and color guard.  The band won first place in percussion, music, and marching.  Cary High School posted the high GE score of the day and it was enough to squeak ahead of Clover for first in class with a score of 92.6

After South Rowan and AL Brown took first and second in the larger AAAAA class, the announcers turned to the overall contest winners to recognize the highest scores from the 19 participants.  Clover took second place, while Cary won first.

The high music score was a huge achievement.  Music Judge George Naff is among the most respected adjudicators in the marching band arena.

Band Grades

In accordance with CHS grading policies, students' grades will reflect a variety of assessments.  Daily participation grades and quizzes count 40%.  Major grades count 60%.  Every time a student attends rehearsal, he or she is evaluated for participation and effort.  A typical quiz will be a short passage from our show.  Students will play these into a tape recorder and the staff will grade them.  Major tests include passing off show music.

Panther Fund Raiser

The CHS Band Booster Club will raise funds this year by working concession stands at the Panther games.  Students 15 or older may also work.  The first opportunity is this Saturday, August 9.  Sign-up lists are in the band room.  Students may sign themselves up.  Parents may come by and sign up also or you may have your student sign you up.  The Panther games are a great fund raiser that DO NOT ask parents or the Clover community to BUY anything!  It's a great way to work for the band.  Last year we earned over 5000 dollars from this fund raiser.  Lisa Parrott is in charge for the booster club.

2003 Contest Show

Our 2003 contest show is entitled "Conflict, the Literary Elements".  Every high school English student knows that literary conflict takes three forms:  man vs. man, man vs. himself, and man vs. the environment.  Our 2003 show reflects those three themes.  The man vs. man theme is represented by the music "Duel of Fates".  This energetic selection  is the battle music from the movie "The Phantom Menace".   Man vs. himself is often portrayed in literature as a conflict of love.  In our show, the love theme from the movie "Far and Away" supports this segment.  Westward expansion was the greatest contest of man vs. his environment in the 19th century.  We have chosen the westward expansion theme from "Far and Away" to complete our show.  All the music in the show was written by the famous motion picture composer, John Williams.

Our show is illustrated for the 2003 souvenir show shirt with elements from three famous artists.  Can you identify the pictures?  Click here for a full color view.
